Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Treatment involves the insertion and manipulation of hair-thin needles through the surface of the body to stimulate specific points.

How does acupuncture work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture is said to promote the flow and balance of 氣 or ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘chee’), often translated as energy, to correct dysfunction. Despite decades of rigorous research and clinical trials, the mechanism of acupuncture is still not fully understood.

In general, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body's homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Researchers are continuing to examine the mechanisms by which acupuncture exerts its effects.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Over the past several decades, research has examined the effectiveness of acupuncture for at least 117 conditions, including, but not limited to:

Questions about treatment

How long do treatments take?

While treatments usually take about 30-45 minutes, they may vary between 15 and 60 minutes or longer.

How many treatments will I need?

Length and frequency of treatment may vary for each individual and will be determined by your provider. As you improve, less frequent treatments are required. Some conditions may require continuous treatment in order to achieve long-term effect.

What does it feel like?

Acupuncture is a comfortable procedure using hair-thin needles. Most people report feeling minimal sensation as the needle is inserted. Some descriptions include a feeling of heaviness, numbness, warmth, tingling, or a tiny pinch that passes in a minute or two.

Will it conflict with my medications or other treatments?

Acupuncture will not conflict with any of your medications. Acupuncture and eastern medicine is used to complement and supplement your western medicine treatment, not replace them.
